From May 20 to September 15, the 2021 Online Chess Olympiad was held on the chesscom Internet platform.

The Olympics were held in 4 stages (divisions) with the participation of 153 teams from 152 countries of the world! The team consisted of two men, two women, one junior, one junior and the same reserve. The competitions were held according to the standard rules of rapid chess (10 minutes each, +5 seconds after the move, starting from the first). The Ukrainian team for previous achievements was immediately admitted to participate in the last, top division, the first 2 places in which went to the playoffs (knockouts). The Ukrainian team took part in the following composition: 1. Vasily Ivanchuk; 2. Kirill Shevchenko; 3. Inna Gaponenko; 4. Julia Osmak; 5. Platon Halperin; 6. Maria Berdnik; 7. Anton Korobov; 8. Vladimir Onischuk; 9. Natalia Buksa; 10. Natalia Zhukova; 11. Evgeniy Roshka; 12. Sofia Gryzlova.

Male FIDE Master (Women’s International Master and Master of Sports of Ukraine) 18-year-old Maria Berdnik, playing in the main team, scored 4.5 points out of 6, winning the most important games. This result allowed the team to single-handedly take 2nd place and go to the playoffs (knockout) with India, which we, unfortunately, lost. However, despite this, Ukraine still entered the top 8 strongest countries in the world! Congratulations to the Ukrainian team and Maria with such a good result!
